Expedition

This could be your summer. Read it the way you'd use it: a main plan for every day, and the versions you'd switch to if the summit is in the clouds, the pass is still snowed in, or the tide is wrong.

Day by day

0
ArrivalAnchorage

Land late in Anchorage. Sleep.

A late flight is a free bonus day, if you plan it like one. Nothing strenuous, just get to bed.

Plan A

Land, get a ride, sleep

Day zero is for recovery, not ambition.

Filler

Anchorage Museum

Bad-weather, tired-legs, or bonus-time option. About $25 per person.

1
Day 1Palmer / Hatcher Pass

Matanuska Peak, or six ways around the clouds.

The big one: an extreme out-and-back, 9 to 10 hours, with lots of water, lots of food, and headlamps just in case. The backups are the real plan here; high peaks around Palmer are often in the clouds.

Plan A

Matanuska Peak Trail

Extreme. Bring headlamps.

10 mi · 9–10 h
Clouds

Hatch Peak / April Bowl

Short and high in Hatcher Pass.

2.1 mi
Clouds

Marmot Mountain or Gold Cord Lake

Quick, scenic, flexible.

2.8 / 1.7 mi

Reed Lakes

Check recent reports first. Can be snowed out in early summer.

Cloud on the ridge. This is why every plan has a lower backup.
2
Day 2Anchorage → Girdwood

Chugach front range, Anchorage to Girdwood.

Two shorter hikes stacked into one day, with the cloud forecast deciding the order. Stay on the Anchorage side tonight.

Plan A

Peak 3 & Peak 2 loop

Watch the cloud cover.

3.4 mi · 3.5–4 h
Clouds

Crow Pass · Crystal Lake · Barnes Mtn

Actually better on a cloudy day.

Day 3Turnagain Pass / Moose Pass

Turnagain Pass and a ridge you'll talk about for years.

Download offline maps; the top is lightly marked. Then Slaughter Ridge, with a scramble at the end. Sleep in Moose Pass.

Plan A

Offline maps required.

Day 4Seward / Kenai Fjords NP

Kenai Fjords: one day, four versions.

This is the day that shows how we plan. Check conditions the evening before, then pick the version the mountain allows.

Plan A

Hideout Trail

Lower, snow-free, big views of the range.
